The value of diversity has never been more prominent; at PlayInnové, we understand that true innovation arises from the fusion of diverse perspectives. Our recent retreat to Washington state was a testament to the transformative power of diversity of thought, as we explored the intersection of nature's beauty and the richness of diverse minds coming together.

Our journey began with a spirit of curiosity and openness. Washington state, with its vibrant natural beauty, served as the perfect backdrop for exploring divergent thinking. The lush forests and tranquil waters inspired us to break free from conventional thinking and embrace new perspectives. As we hiked through the moss-draped trails and stood in awe of the panoramic views, we felt our minds expanding, opening to a myriad of innovative ideas.

Nature has a unique way of rejuvenating the soul and sparking creativity. Our time spent in the great outdoors allowed us to disconnect from our daily routines and reconnect with our inner creativity. The crisp mountain air, the soothing sound of waves crashing against the shore, and the stunning vistas provided the perfect environment for reflection and inspiration. It was in these moments of tranquility that we realized the true value of diverse thinking – the ability to see the world through different lenses and find beauty in unexpected places.

Exploring Divergent Thinking

Diversity of thought refers to the inclusion of varied cognitive perspectives in decision-making processes. It is the collective combination of different ways of thinking, understanding, and problem-solving. According to a study published in the Harvard Business Review, teams with diverse cognitive styles outperform homogeneous teams by 20% in innovation and problem-solving capabilities. This diversity drives better decision-making, enhances problem-solving abilities, and spurs innovation.

We utilize creative practices and play to develop and encourage diversity of thought. Our retreat showcased how these practices can serve as catalysts for innovation:

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Methods: Using LEGO® bricks to facilitate creative thinking and problem-solving, participants build models representing their thoughts, ideas, and solutions, allowing for a tangible exploration of abstract concepts. A study by Gauntlett (2007) found that using LEGO® bricks for idea generation encourages participants to express thoughts they might not articulate verbally.

Collaborative Art Projects: Engaging in group art projects can help individuals see problems from different angles. When diverse minds come together to create something, they share unique perspectives that can lead to innovative solutions. Research by Torrance and Ball (1984) demonstrated that collaborative creativity enhances problem-solving skills and fosters a sense of collective innovation.

Play-Based Workshops: Workshops that incorporate elements of play can significantly enhance creativity and innovation. Play reduces stress, increases engagement, and opens up participants to new ways of thinking. A study by Russ (2016) highlights that play promotes cognitive flexibility, which is crucial for creative problem-solving.

Bonding and Team Building

One of the highlights of our trip was the incredible bonding experiences we shared. Whether it was roasting marshmallows around a campfire, building LEGO® brick ducks, or simply sharing stories under the starry sky, each moment brought us closer together. These experiences reinforced the importance of trust, collaboration, and mutual respect. By embracing our differences and celebrating our unique strengths, we created a strong foundation for innovation and success.

Navigating through the state, we were reminded of the limitless potential that comes from embracing our differences. The breathtaking views from the Olympic Mountains served as a powerful metaphor for the heights we can achieve when we leverage the power of diverse thinking. Each member of the team brought their own unique perspective, enriching our discussions and leading to breakthrough ideas. It was a profound reminder that diversity is not just a buzzword – it’s the key to unlocking our full potential.

Diversity of thought is a powerful driver of innovation and creativity. By incorporating creative practices and play into the workplace, organizations can uncover innovative ideas and solutions. These practices not only break down conventional thinking patterns but also encourage the inclusion of varied cognitive perspectives. As businesses continue to navigate complex challenges, fostering diversity of thought through creativity and play will be key to staying ahead in the innovation race.
